Specific System Questions

A heat pump moves heat in the opposite direction of its natural flow. In winter, it takes heat from the outside air (even when it’s cold) and transfers it indoors to warm your space. In summer, it works like an air conditioner, removing heat from the indoor air and releasing it outside to cool the room.

  • A single-stage HVAC system is simpler and cheaper but may be less efficient and provide less comfort due to its inability to adjust its output.
  • A multi-stage HVAC system offers more efficient operation and improved comfort, with the ability to adjust the heating or cooling level based on the demand, but it comes at a higher initial cost.

A ductless mini-split system is a type of HVAC (heating, ventilation, and air conditioning) system that provides both heating and cooling without the need for traditional ductwork. It consists of two main components: an outdoor unit and one or more indoor units. These systems are becoming increasingly popular due to their flexibility, energy efficiency, and ease of installation, especially in spaces where installing ductwork is difficult or impractical.

A programmable thermostat is a type of thermostat that allows you to set a schedule for your heating and cooling system, adjusting the temperature automatically based on your preferences and lifestyle. It helps improve comfort and energy efficiency by regulating the temperature of your home when you’re not around or when you’re asleep, without needing manual adjustments.

  • SEER measures cooling efficiency, and is important for reducing cooling costs in warmer climates.
  • HSPF measures heating efficiency, and is important for evaluating energy consumption during the heating season in colder climates. Both ratings help consumers choose energy-efficient HVAC systems, but they apply to different functions of the system: SEER for cooling and HSPF for heating. When considering a heat pump, you should look at both ratings to ensure you are getting the best performance for both cooling and heating.

The change occurring with refrigerants involves a shift away from ozone-depleting substances (CFCs and HCFCs) and high-GWP refrigerants (like HFCs) towards more sustainable, low-GWP alternatives such as HFOs and natural refrigerants. This transition is driven by global environmental goals, such as reducing the impact of refrigerants on climate change and ozone depletion. While the new refrigerants offer significant environmental benefits, the transition presents challenges in terms of safety, compatibility, and cost.

Cost and Installation Questions

Between $8,000 and $20,000 depending on tonnage & efficiency

The cost of an HVAC system depends on a variety of factors, including the type and size of the system, its energy efficiency, the complexity of installation, the quality of ductwork, additional features, location, and ongoing maintenance. It’s essential to balance upfront costs with long-term savings on energy bills and the system’s overall durability. To make the best decision, it’s important to evaluate your home’s specific needs, climate, and budget.
